ASSIGNMENT: Finding strong compositions in documentary photography

DSC_7141

Arash, 31, an Iranian University of Washington Ph.D. student, rallies the crowd at the “No Ban, No Wall” anti-Trump protest at Westlake Park in Seattle, Wash. on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017.

Reflection: While this is a scene that is literally designed to be photographed, I think this shot reflects decent framing as well as usage of dynamic lighting (hard light, in this case). While the majority of the event’s speakers were cast in shadow, the sun peaked over the adjacent buildings and lit up the stage right as Arash began speaking, providing for dramatic illumination. The lighting was slightly difficult to work with because it cast the left side of Arash’s face in extreme shadow, in addition to both his eyes. In hindsight, I would have tried to move to his left and take a photo where he was backlit (though, if I had done that, my shot wouldn’t have included the signs which provided both framing and context.
